PARTNERSHIP & COOPERATION
A strong partnership and cooperation has evolved around this important undertaking which has given birth to this significant move of making Hawasa University STEM center a reality. Had it not been for the unwavering commitment of the following institutions and individuals the Center would hardly have assumed its present status:
MR. MARK GELFAND
The Gelfand Family Charity Trust (GFCT) strives to provide hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) enrichment for middle- and high-school students.
In Ethiopia, this mission is accomplished through the establishment of Science & Engineering centers, as well as supporting labs in the schools in conjunction with school building construction. Mission success can be measured by students choosing STEM as the focus of their hobbies, after-school activities, fields of study and career.
FOKA SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CENTER
Foka Science and Engineering Center which is the first of its kind in Ethiopia and which is regarded by Mr. Mark as his flagship of his STEM movement is located in Bishoftu Town 45 kms east of Addis Ababa . The Center which was inaugurated on October 2010 is nested in Foka Primary school , a ramshackle dilapidated school which was renovated and refurbished by Mr. Gelfand . The center has an impressive self contained building with four fully equipped laboratories an auditorium and office rooms.
